Cocktail Hour: A Ginger Renacida with Vicio Mezcal
In vino veritas. In cervesio felicitas. And (as far as I'm concerned) in cocktails, rebirth.
I'm a wary cocktailer. I've always stuck to craft beer, and more specifically, draught craft beer. I was quite happy to stay in the safe and happy universe of artisanal brews, especially since that world has been experiencing a Big Bang as more and more microbreweries are popping up faster than you can say reinheitsebot.
But, I've since expanded my repertoire to include spirits, and in my brief but noble quest to find my signature drink, I've gravitated toward ginger-centric libations. (The logic behind this? Ginger makes it virtually hangover-proof.)
Here's my go-to; a zesty, smoky mezcal and ginger cocktail I call the Vicio Renacida - that's Spanish for "reborn". It's an re-incarnation of a margarita and an agave bonfire, and after a few of these, you will certainly feel reborn. Or, if you're lucky, you may even be reborn as Vicio's mascot, an axolotl, like Julio Cortazar,
VICIO RENACIDA
Ingredients:
1.5 oz Vicio Mezcal
1 oz Domaine de Canton Ginger Liqueur
1/2 oz lemon or lime juice (fresh squeezed, that's about half a lemon)
1/2 oz simple syrup
Fresh Ginger
Candied Ginger
Dice some fresh ginger and muddle in a tumbler. Pour Vicio Mezcal, Domain de Canton liqueur, simple syrup and lemon juice into a shaker and shake vigorously with ice. Strain, and pour into the tumbler over the muddled ginger. Garnish with candied ginger.
