The Perfect Fancy Vacation Dress Exists

The Perfect Fancy Vacation Dress Exists

There’s nothing I love more than a fancy dress that wears like a casual dress. I hatehatehate clothing that feels too fussy - something I’m constantly tugging at, or that I can’t breathe in, or an uncomfortably fabric or zipper or anything that I’ll be focusing on instead of focusing on having fun. (Well, to be fair, who does like those things?? But some people are able to ignore them in the name of fashion, and your girl Untouchable cannot.)

With all that in mind, I snagged the Fleur Strapless Satin Dress from Anthropologie on a whim. I walked past it in the store and absentmindedly ran my hand over the material - half compulsion, have curiosity - and it was soooo thick and silky that I had to try it on. It’s not really my style nor do I tend to invest much time or money in vacation-wear but the price was impulse buy-able and I have a couple warm-weather trips this winter so I figured it just might pleasantly surprise me. Once I got to the dressing room, indeed it did, and I snapped it right up.

Once I got home, I read some of the reviews on Anthro’s website, and they weren’t all great, to be honest - a lot of wearers complained that they felt they had to pull it up a lot - I wore mine with a sturdy, lined strapless bra that kind of created a shelf for the top to sit on so I didn’t tug at it at all. The fabric, like I said, is super silky and yes, slippery, so I imagine if you wear it with one of those smooth, seamless pull-on strapless bras that it slide right down. A few other wearers complained about pulls in the material. I have not had that happen and it has been packed, unpacked, and repacked again for the trip. I will say, though, that you should plan to travel with a mini steamer like I did. (THIS is the travel steamer I have and I love it. I use it at home as well as for travel and I don’t find that I need a larger one for regular home use.) I didn’t actually need it when I arrived since - not to brag but - I did a pretty good job folding and packing it, but I tossed it on a chair after wearing it and it is completely, extremely wrinkled.

Perfect for an elegant family dinner at DUNE by Jean-Georges at the Four Seasons - Ocean Club on Paradise Island in the Bahamas.

PROS:

Super easy to wear
Comfortable
Lots of compliments from strangers
Forgiving fabric - it’s lined, thick satin that skms your body in a flattering way, not in a “I can see what you ate for dinner and what underwear you’re wearing” type way.

CONS:

Wrinkles easily - this is a big one for me, but with the right travel steamer, it’s worth it.
The material allegedly pulls (hasn’t happened to me, but several reviewers said it has happened to them).
Commenters over at Anthro.com say they had to pull it up a lot - with the right bra that shouldn’t be an issue.

So do I recommend it? Yes. I’ll come back on here and update it if I notice any pulls or anything unsavory, but so far so good!
