If You're Not Obsessed with FARM Rio Already, This Round-Up Will Get You There.

If you play word association with “Rio de Janeiro” and then make a clothing line based off of that, you’d get FARM Rio. I love how fearless and playful the pieces are - the bright, bold colors and the in-your-face, tropical-inspired prints are unlike anything else. (Real talk, you can spot the FARM Rio rack from across a crowded department store - but they somehow seem to go with everything.) And don’t get me started on the fit! I don’t know how they do it but the tailoring is flawless. The silhouettes, from swingy dresses to sexy miniskirts and halters, look great on every body type, skin tone and shape. FARM Rio is truly a force of nature. Each and every piece is fun, effortless and beachy, and sure to stand out and make you feel dressed up and ready to slay.

FARM got started in 1997, when founders Katia Barros + Marcello Bastos sold their first pieces at an open-air market in Rio, and today, the brand is carried at Nordstrom, Net-A-Porter, Anthropologie, Neiman Marcus, shopbop, Tuckernuck and beyond. In fact, FARM is Brazil’s biggest fashion label, and there are FARM Rio store locations in London, California, Paris, New York, Miami, and all over Brazil, of course.

What’s with the agrarian name, you ask? Banana-printed mini skirts and teeny-tiny crocheted shorts aren’t exactly wear-around-the-farm apparel. The moniker is actually inspired by Farme de Amoedo, a street along Ipanema Beach. “It used to be a meeting point for cool young people in Rio,” Katia told Anthropologie. “People used to say, ‘Let’s go to the beach at Farme,’ or ‘Let’s meet at Farme,” which made the name sound very local.” She dropped the E because in English, farm reminds her of “what is natural, where the growth process happens.”

And, the brand doesn’t just use nature as an inspiration - it also gives back. For the past three years, they’ve planted one tree for each purchase on their website, in their brick + mortar stores, or via retailers. As of late 2021, they planted nearly three quarters of a million trees to aid in reforestation efforts in the Amazon rainforest and the Atlantic Forest.

Here is my first FARM purchase - a silky wrap skirt with a punchy print and a playful, contrasting tasseled belt. I bought it last summer, and while I’m not exactly back to my pre-baby weight (see the second photo - I hope she comes back!), it still fits like a charm and makes me feel more pulled together than I actually am. (Even so, I wouldn’t trade my sweet baby Winston for the world, or a slim waist!)
