Female designers of womenswear use their inherent knowledge of what it means to be a woman, but male designers do it with empathy, bravado and a little bit of imagination.
Just as each label has a designer, or a team of designers, they should have at least one person whose sole role is painting a vivid picture of the brand - its history, its outlook, and its future. Brands would do well to employ a staff scribe, separate from the team of quippy copywriters who design sales-oriented marketing copy.
What Byron Lars, the designer of this dress, and Anthropologie, have quietly managed to do is quite the feat. They have discovered an immortal retail formula that I'm not sure has been achieved since the Dawn of Fast Fashion.
Seven strange things that are totally odd in the real world, but totally acceptable, even commonplace, during the planetary alignment that is NYFW. Because if you weren't immortalized in a street style slideshow, were you really even at NYFW at all?
It was either my mom or someone from Gossip Girl who said something to the effect of "If you're wearing something low-cut up top, go for a longer hemline on bottom and vice versa." This dress does just that, by teasing glimpses of skin but keeping it classy with a full skirt that falls in the most perfect pleats like only Kamali's signature jersey knits can.
Business and bottom lines aside, there has been one constant source of support for the designer - his mother, Maureen Sternberg. The simple note she posted on Scott Sternberg's now-famous "Fat Lady" post, his final on the brand's instagram, says it all.
Check out these quotes about camo and see if you can guess which of them were spoken by fashion industry personalities or by military personnel. Perhaps there's not such a huge difference between the US Army and the Balmain Army, after all.
The hottest happenings from the past week? Check my Fashion News column at Bustle.com. Here are the top headlines. Hint: Taking selfies just got easier (and chicer), Givenchy's runway had sky-high highs (winged eyeliner, lilac lace, Kendall, Candice and Naomi) and very low lows (inmate fashion, men in skirts), and Bonobos is running the most apropos fundraiser ever.
Lobo Mau and its ferocious mascot are becoming something of a cult symbol in Haddad's native Philadelphia, and with fans as far away as Cali and Brazil, I anticipate that the wolf will reach icon status soon - glad I snapped this tee up while I could!
I'm much more at home in a dress than I am in jeans and a sweatshirt. But when a dress feels like - nay, is quite literally made out of - a sweatshirt like this black and white dress from indie label Lobo Mau, it's never coming off. (Sorry, fellows.)
"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication," said Leonardo da Vinci, but you don't need to tell designer Gina deWolfe that. Earlier this year, she launched her eponymous line, deWolfe, opening with the Wolfepack, a sleek, no-frills leather backpack-satchel.
Nervous System has been churning - er, printing - out incredibly complex, lightweight, and nature-inspired jewelry and accessories since 2007. Recently, however, the Somerville-based company has added clothing to the mix with their new line, Kinematics, which boasts a bodice and a dress, as well as accessories like the Tetra 175n necklace.
I sat down with Stella McCartney before the MSPCA-Angell fundraiser at Saks Boston to talk jumpsuits, women in business, and what it will take to make real fur finally go out of style.
Together nearly twenty years, Sachin and Babi met at FIT, and have worked with Oscar de la Renta, Valentino, and Armani as a B2B embroidery company. In 2011, they started their own line of RTW and evening wear, and the modern-day Alice in Wonderland ball gown from the current collection is just one of many pieces you need to see (and touch, and wear) to believe.
When it comes to cut-offs, I'm more into crop tops than daisy dukes. 6-pack or not (not), a beautifully structured high-waisted skirt and a crop top are the perfect pair.
You wanna know where I'll be this summer? Check The Verb Hotel. The former Howard Johnson space has been majorly upgraded with a rock 'n roll twist, and is quite literally seeped in music, and its memorabilia.
DEE OCLEPPO HILFIGER has led many lives. Now, the Rhode Island native is back in the US, married to Tommy Hilfiger, raising another young son, and heading a handbag brand that has already been picked up by Saks Fifth Avenue, Harrods, Hudson Bay and Galeries Lafayette in its first year on the market.
I channeled Margot Tenenbaum's style for this quintessentially Spring look from LOFT - a crisp white shirtdress and an equally crisp army jacket in olive. A flowery fabric headband added just a tiny bit of color to the otherwise muted palette, which also included a gray belt and matching sneakers.
You know what's not cute? Plodding through the airport in ratty sweatpants. We've all seen it, and some of us (ahem) have done it. (Hey, it was an early flight!) But you don't need to tell that to Dorian Lightbown, NIC+ZOE founder and CEO, who designs for jet-setting cool girls.
One of Boston's best bag designers just so happens to also be one of Boston's best interior designers. Meichi Peng has been doing it all for over a decade now, from her perch in Boston's arts-centric SoWa.
